Rabeprazole Tablets Uses
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Rabeprazole is often prescribed to manage the symptoms of GERD. This condition occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to symptoms like heartburn, chest pain, and regurgitation.
- Peptic Ulcers: Rabeprazole is used to heal and prevent ulcers in the stomach or duodenum. Peptic ulcers can be caused by factors like infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria or excessive use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: This is a rare condition characterized by the overproduction of stomach acid. Rabeprazole is effective in managing this condition.
- Stomach Acid-Related Conditions: Rabeprazole may also be used in other conditions where there is an excess of stomach acid production, such as systemic mastocytosis or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1).
- Prevention of Ulcers: In some cases, particularly for individuals who are at high risk of developing ulcers due to NSAID use, rabeprazole may be prescribed as a preventive measure.
Rabeprazole Tablets – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology
Mechanism of Action:
- Proton Pump Inhibition: Inside the lining of the stomach are tiny pumps known as proton pumps. These pumps release acid into the stomach. Rabeprazole specifically inhibits the action of the hydrogen-potassium ATPase pump, which is the final step in the production of stomach acid. By doing this, it significantly reduces the amount of acid that is secreted into the stomach.
Pharmacology:
- Absorption: Rabeprazole is usually administered orally in tablet form. It is absorbed in the small intestine and enters the bloodstream.
- Protein Binding: It binds extensively to plasma proteins, primarily to a protein called albumin. This binding restricts its distribution in the body.
- Metabolism: Rabeprazole undergoes metabolism in the liver through a process called cytochrome P450-mediated oxidation. The main enzyme responsible for this is CYP2C19. After metabolism, it forms inactive metabolites.

- Headache: Some individuals may experience mild to moderate headaches.
- Nausea or Vomiting: This can occur in some cases, especially when the medication is taken on an empty stomach.
