Paracetamol & Dicyclomine HCL Tablets

About Drug

What is Paracetamol & Dicyclomine HCL Tablet ?

Paracetamol and Dicyclomine HCl tablet is a combination medication that contains two different active ingredients: paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) and dicyclomine hydrochloride.

  • Paracetamol (Acetaminophen): This is a commonly used over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer. It works by blocking the production of prostaglandins in the brain, which are chemicals that cause pain and fever. Paracetamol is often used to treat various conditions, including headaches, muscle aches, arthritis, and to reduce fever.
  • Dicyclomine Hydrochloride (HCl): This is an antispasmodic medication that helps to relieve muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the gut, which can help alleviate symptoms like abdominal cramps, pain, and discomfort associated with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Paracetamol & Dicyclomine HCL Tablet Use

  • Paracetamol (Acetaminophen):
  • Usage :
    • Pain Relief: It can be used for mild to moderate pain, such as headaches, menstrual cramps, toothaches, and muscle aches.
    • Fever Reduction: It is used to lower fever associated with various conditions.
    • Do not take more than the recommended dose.
    • Avoid alcohol while taking paracetamol, as it can increase the risk of liver damage.
    • If you have liver disease or are a heavy drinker, consult a doctor before taking paracetamol.
  • Dicyclomine HCl:
    • Usage:
      • Relief of Abdominal Pain: Dicyclomine helps to relax the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, which can reduce symptoms like abdominal cramps and pain associated with IBS.

Paracetamol & Dicyclomine HCL Tablet – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology

Paracetamol (Acetaminophen):

  • Mechanism of Action: The exact mechanism of action of paracetamol is not completely understood, but it’s believed to work by inhibiting an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX). Unlike nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, paracetamol primarily acts on COX in the central nervous system, reducing the production of prostaglandins (chemicals involved in pain and inflammation) in the brain.
  • Pharmacology: Paracetamol is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is distributed throughout the body. It’s metabolized primarily in the liver and excreted in the urine. It has a relatively short half-life, which means it needs to be taken multiple times a day for sustained effects.

Dicyclomine HCl:

  • Mechanism of Action: Dicyclomine is an anticholinergic drug. It works by blocking the action of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine in the nervous system. Acetylcholine is responsible for transmitting signals in the parasympathetic nervous system, which is involved in various involuntary bodily functions. By blocking acetylcholine, dicyclomine reduces the spasms and contractions of smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Pharmacology: After oral administration, dicyclomine is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. It has a relatively quick onset of action, usually within 30 minutes to 1 hour. It’s metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine.
