Nifedipine Tablets

About Drug

What is Nifedipine Tablets?

Nifedipine is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It’s primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and certain types of chest pain (angina). Nifedipine works by relaxing and widening the blood vessels, which makes it easier for the heart to pump blood.

The tablets of nifedipine contain the active ingredient nifedipine and come in various strengths. The dosage and form of the medication (immediate-release or extended-release) depend on the specific condition being treated and the individual’s response to the drug.

Nifedipine Tablets Use

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Nifedipine is often prescribed to help lower high blood pressure. By relaxing the blood vessels, it reduces the resistance to blood flow, which in turn lowers blood pressure.
  • Angina Pectoris: This is a type of chest pain that occurs when there is a reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, usually due to narrowed arteries. Nifedipine helps relax and widen the arteries, allowing more blood to flow to the heart muscle, which can alleviate angina symptoms.
  • Raynaud’s Phenomenon: This is a condition where certain areas of the body (usually fingers and toes) feel numb and cold in response to cold temperatures or stress. Nifedipine can help dilate the blood vessels and improve blood flow to these areas.
  • Preterm Labor: In some cases, nifedipine may be used to delay premature labor by relaxing the uterine muscles. However, its use in this context is typically determined by a healthcare provider and closely monitored.
  • Off-Label Uses: In certain cases, nifedipine may be used off-label for conditions not listed above. This should only be done under the guidance and supervision of a healthcare provider.

Nifedipine Tablets – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology.

  • Vasodilation: Nifedipine primarily acts on smooth muscle cells lining the walls of arteries, especially in the peripheral vasculature (blood vessels outside the heart and brain). By inhibiting calcium entry, it prevents smooth muscle contraction, leading to relaxation and dilation of arterial vessels. This reduces peripheral resistance and subsequently lowers blood pressure.
  • Reduced Cardiac Workload: By dilating peripheral arteries, nifedipine reduces the pressure against which the heart must pump. This decreases the heart’s workload and oxygen demand, which can be beneficial in conditions like angina where the heart’s blood supply may be compromised.
  • Coronary Vasodilation: Nifedipine also causes dilation of coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle itself. This improves blood flow to the heart, which can be particularly important in cases of angina or ischemic heart disease.

Nifedipine Tablets – Side-effects

  • Headache: This is one of the more common side effects. It is usually temporary and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication.
  • Flushing or Warmth in the Face: This can be a result of the dilation of blood vessels.
  • Dizziness or Lightheadedness: This may occur, especially when getting up from a sitting or lying position. It’s important to stand up slowly to minimize this effect.
  • Swelling of the Ankles, Feet, or Legs (Peripheral Edema): This can occur due to fluid retention.
  • Rapid Heartbeat (Tachycardia): In some cases, nifedipine may cause an increase in heart rate.
