What is Imatinib Capsules ?
Imatinib is a targeted therapy medication available in capsule form. It is used in the treatment of certain types of cancer, particularly chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Imatinib belongs to a class of drugs called tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
Imatinib Capsules Uses
- Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML): Imatinib is primarily used for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood.
- Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs): Imatinib is also used in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, which are a type of tumor found in the digestive tract.
Imatinib Capsules – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology
Imatinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that targets specific proteins, particularly BCR-ABL fusion protein and c-Kit protein, which are associated with the development and progression of CML and GISTs, respectively. These proteins are involved in signaling pathways that promote cell growth, division, and survival.
In CML, a genetic abnormality leads to the formation of the BCR-ABL fusion protein, which drives the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the bone marrow and blood. Imatinib works by inhibiting the activity of the BCR-ABL protein, thereby suppressing the growth and proliferation of leukemia cells.
In GISTs, mutations in the c-Kit protein result in the uncontrolled growth of gastrointestinal stromal cells. Imatinib inhibits the activity of c-Kit, leading to a decrease in the growth and spread of GIST cells.
