Esomeprazole Tablet Uses
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Esomeprazole is commonly prescribed to manage GERD. It helps alleviate symptoms like heartburn, acid regurgitation, and chest pain caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus.
- Peptic Ulcers: Esomeprazole is used to heal both gastric (stomach) and duodenal (small intestine) ulcers. It can also be prescribed to prevent ulcers from forming, especially in individuals who are at high risk due to factors like NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) use.
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: This is a rare condition where the stomach produces excessive amounts of acid. Esomeprazole is used to control and manage the symptoms associated with this condition.
- Erosive Esophagitis: In cases where GERD has caused significant damage to the esophagus, esomeprazole is prescribed to help heal the erosions and prevent further damage.
Esomeprazole Tablet – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology
Mechanism of Action:
- Proton Pump Inhibition: Esomeprazole, like other PPIs, inhibits the action of a specific enzyme in the stomach lining called the proton pump. This enzyme is responsible for the final step in the production of stomach acid. By blocking the proton pump, esomeprazole significantly reduces the amount of acid that is produced.
- Gastric Acid Suppression: By decreasing the production of gastric acid, esomeprazole helps alleviate symptoms associated with conditions like GERD, peptic ulcers, and erosive esophagitis.
Pharmacology:
- Absorption: Esomeprazole is absorbed in the small intestine, and its absorption is not affected by food. It is rapidly converted to its active form in the acidic environment of the stomach.
- Metabolism: Once absorbed, esomeprazole undergoes hepatic metabolism, primarily through the enzyme CYP2C19. It is converted into several metabolites, with the primary one being 5-hydroxyesomeprazole.
Esomeprazole Tablets – Side-effects
