Darunavir Tablets

About Drug

What is Darunavir Tablets ?

Darunavir is a medication used in the treatment of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. It belongs to a class of drugs known as protease inhibitors. Darunavir works by inhibiting the activity of the protease enzyme, which is necessary for the replication of the virus.

Darunavir Tablets Uses

  • HIV Infection: Darunavir is used as part of a combination therapy for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients (aged 3 years and older).
  • Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART): Darunavir is a key component of modern HIV treatment regimens. It is often prescribed along with other antiretroviral medications to create an effective combination therapy. The goal of HAART is to suppress the replication of the HIV virus, lower the viral load in the body, and maintain or increase CD4 cell counts.
  • Prevention of HIV Transmission: Darunavir, when taken as prescribed, can help reduce the viral load in the body, which in turn can reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others through sexual contact or from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding.
  • Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP): In certain situations, Darunavir may be used as part of PEP, a short-term course of antiretroviral medications given to individuals who have been potentially exposed to HIV (e.g., after unprotected sex or needlestick injuries). PEP must be started as soon as possible after potential exposure and ideally within 72 hours.
  • Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): While not the first-line choice, in some cases, Darunavir may be considered as part of PrEP, a preventive strategy for individuals at high risk of HIV infection. PrEP involves taking HIV medications on an ongoing basis to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

Darunavir Tablets – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology

  • Inhibition of HIV Protease: HIV uses an enzyme called protease to cleave long chains of viral proteins into smaller, functional pieces that are necessary for the assembly of new virus particles. Darunavir specifically targets and inhibits the activity of the HIV protease enzyme. This disruption prevents the production of mature and infectious HIV particles.
  • Specific Binding: Darunavir has a high affinity for the active site of the HIV protease enzyme. This means that it binds tightly to the enzyme, making it difficult for the protease to function effectively.
  • Resistance Management: Darunavir has been engineered to resist the development of drug-resistant strains of HIV. This is achieved through its specific chemical structure, which hinders the ability of the virus to develop mutations that would normally confer resistance to other protease inhibitors.
