Cisplatin Injection – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology
Cisplatin works by forming highly reactive platinum complexes that bind to DNA in the cancer cells, leading to the formation of cross-links between DNA strands. These cross-links disrupt the DNA structure and prevent cancer cells from dividing and growing. Cisplatin primarily affects rapidly dividing cells, including cancer cells, ultimately leading to cell death.
Cisplatin Injection – Side-effects
- Hearing Loss: Cisplatin can cause hearing loss, particularly high-frequency hearing loss. This can be temporary or permanent.
- Neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy, which causes tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, is a potential side effect of cisplatin.
- Hypersensitivity Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to cisplatin, which can manifest as rash, itching, or difficulty breathing.
