Pregabalin Tablets

About Drug

What is Pregabalin Tablets?

Pregabalin is a medication that is primarily used to treat neuropathic pain (pain caused by damage to the nerves) and as an adjunctive therapy for partial seizures. It’s sold under various brand names, including Lyrica.

Pregabalin Tablets Uses

  • Neuropathic Pain: Pregabalin is often prescribed to manage chronic neuropathic pain. This type of pain is caused by damage or dysfunction of the nerves. It can be associated with conditions like diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia (nerve pain following shingles), and nerve injury due to accidents or surgeries.
  • Epilepsy: Pregabalin is used as an adjunctive therapy for partial seizures. It helps in reducing the frequency and severity of these seizures when used in combination with other anti-epileptic medications.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Off-label use): While not officially approved for this purpose, some doctors may prescribe pregabalin to manage symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It can help with certain types of anxiety symptoms.
  • Fibromyalgia (Off-label use): Pregabalin is sometimes prescribed off-label for fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by widespread pain and tenderness in the muscles and soft tissues.
  • Restless Legs Syndrome (Off-label use): In some cases, doctors may prescribe pregabalin to manage the symptoms of restless legs syndrome, a neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs.

Pregabalin Tablets – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology

  • Binding to Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels: Pregabalin binds to a subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system. Specifically, it attaches to the α2-δ subunit of certain calcium channels in the presynaptic nerve terminals. This binding reduces the influx of calcium ions into the nerve terminals.
  • Reduction in Neurotransmitter Release: By binding to these calcium channels, pregabalin decreases the release of several excitatory neurotransmitters, including glutamate, noradrenaline, and substance P. This reduction in neurotransmitter release dampens the excitability of nerve cells and inhibits the propagation of pain signals.

Pregabalin Tablets – Side-effect

  • Dizziness or Lightheadedness: This is one of the most commonly reported side effects. It’s important to be cautious, especially when standing up quickly.
  • Drowsiness or Sedation: Pregabalin can cause drowsiness, which may impair your ability to concentrate or operate machinery.
  • Dry Mouth: Some people may experience a dry sensation in their mouth.
