What is Aluminium Hydroxide Tablets ?
Aluminium hydroxide tablets are a type of medication commonly used to treat symptoms of excessive stomach acid and related conditions. It belongs to a class of drugs known as antacids.
Aluminium Hydroxide Tablets Uses
- Acid Indigestion and Heartburn: They are commonly used to provide relief from symptoms of acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, and related discomfort caused by excess stomach acid.
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Aluminium hydroxide tablets can be part of a treatment plan for individuals suffering from GERD, a condition where stomach acid regularly flows back into the esophagus.
- Peptic Ulcers: They may be recommended for individuals with peptic ulcers, which are sores that form on the lining of the stomach or the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine).
- Dyspepsia: This term refers to a group of symptoms related to the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as bloating, belching, and discomfort, often caused by excess stomach acid.
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: This is a rare condition where the stomach produces too much acid. Aluminium hydroxide tablets may be used in managing this condition.
Aluminium Hydroxide Tablets – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology
- Neutralization of Stomach Acid: Aluminium hydroxide is a basic (alkaline) compound. When it comes into contact with stomach acid (which is acidic), a chemical reaction occurs. The acid and base react to form water and a salt. In this case, the reaction results in the formation of water and aluminium chloride. This process effectively reduces the acidity in the stomach.
- Coating of the Stomach Lining: Aluminium hydroxide can also create a protective coating over the lining of the stomach. This coating helps shield the stomach lining from the potentially harmful effects of excess acid.
Pharmacology:
- Absorption: Aluminium hydroxide is not significantly absorbed into the bloodstream. This means that most of it remains in the gastrointestinal tract and is excreted through the feces. Because of its poor absorption, it doesn’t contribute significantly to systemic (body-wide) effects or complications.
- Duration of Action: It provides relatively short-term relief from symptoms of excessive stomach acid. Its effects typically begin within an hour and can last for several hours, depending on factors like the dosage and individual patient factors.
Aluminium Hydroxide Tablets – Side-effects
- Constipation: Aluminium hydroxide can slow down bowel movements, leading to constipation, especially if used in high doses or over a long period.
- Loss of Appetite: Some people may experience a decrease in appetite while taking aluminium hydroxide.
- Nausea and Vomiting: These symptoms can occur, especially if the tablets are not taken with enough water.
