Valsartan Tablets

About Drug

What is Valsartan Tablets?

Valsartan is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It is commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. Valsartan works by blocking the effects of a hormone called angiotensin II, which constricts blood vessels and raises blood pressure.

Valsartan Tablets Use

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure):
    • Valsartan helps lower blood pressure by blocking the effects of a hormone called angiotensin II. This hormone constricts blood vessels, which can lead to elevated blood pressure.
  • Heart Failure:
    • Valsartan is used in the management of heart failure. It helps improve the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently.
  • Post-Heart Attack:
    • In some cases, Valsartan may be prescribed for individuals who have had a heart attack to help prevent further complications.
  • Diabetic Kidney Disease:
    • Valsartan may be used to treat diabetic nephropathy, a type of kidney disease that occurs in people with diabetes.

Valsartan Tablets – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology

  • Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS):
    • The RAAS is a complex hormonal system involved in regulating blood pressure, fluid balance, and electrolyte levels in the body.
    • It begins with the release of renin, an enzyme, by the kidneys in response to low blood pressure or low sodium levels. Renin acts on a protein called angiotensinogen, converting it to angiotensin I.
  • Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE):
    • Angiotensin I is further converted to angiotensin II by an enzyme called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it causes blood vessels to narrow, which leads to an increase in blood pressure.
  • Angiotensin II Receptors:
    • Angiotensin II exerts its effects by binding to specific receptors in various tissues, including blood vessels, heart, adrenal glands, and kidneys. There are two types of angiotensin II receptors: AT1 and AT2.

Valsartan Tablets – Side-effects

  • Dizziness or Lightheadedness: Especially when standing up from a sitting or lying position. This may be more likely at the beginning of treatment or with dosage adjustments.
  • Fatigue or Weakness: Some people may feel more tired than usual.
  • Headache: This can be a common side effect.
  • Drowsiness: In some cases, Valsartan may cause mild drowsiness.
  • Stomach Pain or Diarrhea: These gastrointestinal symptoms can occur in some individuals.
  • Back Pain: This may occur, although it’s not as common.
  • Increased Blood Potassium Levels (Hyperkalemia): This is more likely in individuals with pre-existing kidney problems.
  • Changes in Kidney Function: In rare cases, Valsartan can lead to changes in kidney function. Regular monitoring of kidney function may be necessary
