Enoxaparin 40mg Injection

About Drug

Enoxaparin 40mg Injection Tablets?

Enoxaparin is an anticoagulant medication used to prevent and treat blood clots. It is often prescribed to patients who are at risk for conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), or other clotting disorders.

Enoxaparin is typically administered as an injection, either subcutaneously (under the skin) or intravenously (directly into the bloodstream). It is available in various strengths, including 40mg.

Enoxaparin 40mg Injection Use

  1. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Prophylaxis:
    • Enoxaparin is often prescribed to prevent deep vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs.
  2. Pulmonary Embolism (PE) Prophylaxis:
    • It may be used to prevent pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot travels to the lungs and can be life-threatening.
  3. Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT):
    • Enoxaparin can be used to treat existing deep vein thrombosis.
  4. Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism (PE):
    • It can also be used in the treatment of pulmonary embolism.
  5. Unstable Angina or Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI) Management:
    • Enoxaparin is sometimes used in combination with other medications to manage unstable angina or NSTEMI.
  6. ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Management:
    • It may be used as an anticoagulant in the management of STEMI, often in conjunction with other medications.

Enoxaparin 40mg Injection – Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action:

  • Antithrombotic Activity: Enoxaparin works primarily by enhancing the activity of antithrombin III, a natural substance in the body that inhibits blood clot formation. Antithrombin III inactivates several clotting factors (e.g., Factor Xa, Factor IIa or thrombin), and enoxaparin specifically increases its ability to inhibit Factor Xa.
  • Inhibition of Factor Xa: By binding to antithrombin III, enoxaparin accelerates the inactivation of Factor Xa. Factor Xa is a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade that is responsible for converting prothrombin to thrombin. Inhibiting Factor Xa disrupts the coagulation process, making it more difficult for blood clots to form.
  • Secondary Effect on Thrombin (Factor IIa): Enoxaparin also has some indirect inhibitory effect on thrombin (Factor IIa), although it is less potent in this regard compared to its effect on Factor Xa.

Pharmacology:

  • Bioavailability: Enoxaparin is administered by injection, typically subcutaneously (under the skin). This route of administration provides good bioavailability.
  • Distribution: After injection, enoxaparin is distributed within the body. It does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, which means it has little effect on the central nervous system.
  • Metabolism: Enoxaparin is not extensively metabolized in the liver, which makes it more predictable in terms of dosing compared to some other anticoagulants.

Enoxaparin 40mg Injection – Side-effects

  • Bleeding: This is the most significant side effect of enoxaparin, as it is an anticoagulant. It can cause bleeding or bruising more easily than usual. This can include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or easy bruising. In rare cases, it can lead to serious bleeding. If you experience severe or persistent bleeding, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Pain and Redness at the Injection Site: Since enoxaparin is administered by injection, there may be pain, redness, or swelling at the site. Rotating injection sites can help reduce this.
